Hubub regarding Professor Gates’ arrest in Cambridge
If this had been about a prominent white resident and a white cop or about Mr. Gates and a black cop, it would not have been headline news. So, in this case, where does racism really start? With the neighbor who called the police, (and who ought to know her neighbors by sight) to report a black man breaking into his own home? An overly sensitive black man with a sense of entitlement (because he IS a prominent, highly educated black professor at Harvard?) Or does it start with the media that jumped on this relatively unimportant news item because of the drama they could wring out of it (EPECIALLY since we have a Harvard-educated black man in the White House.) Would racial discord be the smoldering problem it is today, if not for the media fanning the flames? My guess is that as, is usual in human relations, everyone involved in this story has an ax to grind, including President Obama. That such a consumate politician as Mr. Obama should let his personal opinion get in the way of his common sense is what really surprises me. Mr. Obama, would you have reacted in the same way had perennial Republican presidential hopeful Alan Keyes (who is also black) been the target in this incident?
